George Washington Law School Dean Paul Schiff Berman is a “champion” of law.

That’s according to the fifth-annual “Champions & Visionaries” list from editors of The National Law Journal.

The 20 Washington, D.C., lawyers recognized as “champions” were those who have made significant contributions with public service, pro bono work and advocated for civil liberties. Twenty additional D.C. lawyers were recognized as “visionaries” whose business and legal abilities have improved government or the practice of law. Editors based their selections on nominations from the legal community in addition to their own research and reporting.

“I am, of course, pleased to be recognized, but far more important is that The National Law Journal noted the incredible innovation and dynamism of the Law School and the many new initiatives we have launched this past year to create a truly differentiated legal education that is unique among top schools,” said Mr. Berman, who has held his post for a year.

Indeed, it is Mr. Berman’s initiatives, both underway and planned, that editors noted in selecting him. Writing that he brings “high energy and ambition” to the Law School, editors commended his plan to launch a health care law and policy program along with his “Pathways to Practice” initiative, which awards stipends to law graduates who take on unpaid work after leaving school.

They also highlighted his genuine concern for students, writing that Mr. Berman “takes a personal interest in students, calling first-years to talk about their interests and aspirations before the start of classes.”

Provost Steven Lerman also lauded Mr. Berman’s performance.

“Dean Berman brings impressive energy and innovative ideas to GW Law School,” Dr. Lerman said. “The National Law Journal’s recognition of his commitment to public service is especially gratifying, as civic engagement and service are part of our core values.”
