The George Washington men's basketball team took another postseason honor on Tuesday when the D.C. Council acknowledged the Colonial’s National Invitation Tournament Championship with a resolution recognizing the victory.
Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) presented the resolution prior to the D.C. Council's legislative session. Head coach Mike Lonergan was on hand to accept.
"It's very special to be recognized by the city, especially since I grew up here and went to high school at Archbishop Carroll and college at Catholic University," Mr. Lonergan said.
The Colonials won five consecutive games en route to the NIT title, the first in postseason history for GW basketball. Along the way, GW defeated four teams that won their regular season league championships, and at Madison Square Garden in New York the Colonials were dominant in winning two games by an average of 17.5 points.
"We take great pride in being good representatives of GW both on and off the court,” Mr. Lonergan said. "After winning the NIT and setting the school record for wins this season, while also having three of the six members on the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team, and continuing our 100 percent graduation rate, it's an honor to be presented with this resolution."
