The Office of the Registrar, working in collaboration with the Division of IT and representatives from each school, has launched a new online advising and degree auditing system called DegreeMAP – Measuring Academic Progress. DegreeMAP allows students—with just a few clicks— to review, monitor and track their progress toward fulfilling their degree requirements.

“We’re excited about being able to provide this service to students and their advisers,” says Doug McKenna, associate registrar for degree audit.

According to Mr. McKenna, students can “make the most of their time at GW” by using DegreeMAP collaboratively with their academic advisers.

The system is being piloted for undergraduates in the School of Business and the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Following a successful test, the tool will be made available to additional programs and schools in the summer and fall. Graduate, professional and doctoral programs will be included in the second phase of the implementation.

To prepare for the new degree audit system, all GW course numbers were converted to four-digit course numbers from the previous three-digit course numbers.

Mr. McKenna says DegreeMAP helps students choose classes and ensure that they’ve met graduation requirements.

“DegreeMAP will provide clear, concise and actionable information to students and their advisers about how classes apply to program requirements, what requirements are outstanding and how to meet those requirements,” he says.

The new system also benefits advisers, says Mr. McKenna.

“Using the information in DegreeMAP allows advisers to focus on students’ long-term plans and how to achieve them,” he says. “DegreeMAP is a big win for both students and their advisers.”
