The George Washington University was honored for its leadership and commitment to the District on Wednesday by the Greater Washington Urban League.

President Steven Knapp accepted the Whitney M. Young Jr. Leadership Award by video. GW was recognized specifically for its community service and support of city initiatives.

“We share with the Urban League a deep and abiding commitment to expanding opportunities for all citizens of our nation’s capital region,” Dr. Knapp said. “That’s why we place such a strong emphasis on working in partnership with our neighbors to address health disparities, educate future leaders and create jobs.”

GW received the award at the Urban League’s 39th annual Whitney M. Young Jr. Memorial Gala on Wednesday evening at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. This year’s theme was “You…Me…We…DC!” as the Urban League honored those who have made a significant impact on the unification of the District.

“We are so honored to receive such a wonderful award from such a distinguished group,” said Michael Akin, assistant vice president of government, international and community relations and a member of the Urban League’s Advisory Board, who accepted the award in President Knapp’s absence. “GW and the Greater Washington Urban League have worked hand-in-hand for years to help meet the needs of our great city, and we could not be more proud of this partnership.”

Howard University, Mayor Vincent Gray, B.A. ’64, and Kwame Brown, chairman of the D.C. Council also received the leadership award.

“We are especially pleased to work with the D.C. public schools and to enable District of Columbia students to attend the university through our Early College partnership with the School Without Walls and our Stephen Joel Trachtenberg Scholarships,” said Dr. Knapp, who serves on the Urban League’s Board.

GW has been a longtime supporter of the Urban League by hosting its annual meeting on campus, participating in various Urban League events and providing strategic planning through GW’s School of Business Global MBA Case Competition.

“Thank you again for bestowing this great honor upon the George Washington University,” said Dr. Knapp. “It is one we will cherish and from which we will draw inspiration and encouragement for years to come as we continue to work with the Greater Washington Urban League, Mayor Gray, Chairman Brown, my fellow university presidents and all of you to ensure the economic and cultural vitality of this great capital city.”
