A Colonial Cupcake

The first 200 people at tonight’s bonfire celebrating George Washington’s birthday are in for a treat: CakeLove cupcakes.

The chocolate “s’mores” cupcakes are dipped in ganache and topped with vanilla buttercream and graham crackers.

The s’mores cupcakes beat out two competitors also from CakeLove—“cherry blossom” and “buff and blueberry”—in a taste test to become the GW birthday cupcake. About a dozen staff and students participated in the tasting earlier this month.

“We worked with GW’s Program Board and CakeLove to offer our panel of judges three flavors that had obvious significance to our event and to George Washington,” says Kat Bugg, executive director of university events.

“The s’mores cupcake fits in perfectly with the bonfire theme,” she says.

Sophomore Julia Roseman, who serves as parties co-chair for Program Board, oversaw the cupcake creation. She contacted CakeLove to design a GW birthday cupcake last fall since owner Warren Brown is an alumnus. She says the company was great to work with, and the process has been a lot of fun.

“I hope this will be a new annual tradition,” Ms. Roseman says.

It’s a sentiment echoed by Kim LaMore, CakeLove corporate sales and service manager. “We have a great history with GW and special connection through Warren Brown,” she says. “We love supporting the university and being part of it.”

George Washington’s Birthday Bonfire will take place at 6:30 p.m. tonight in University Yard weather permitting. In the case of inclement weather, the celebration will be held at the Charles E. Smith Center tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
