Colonial Calm

February 9, 2011

In light of a recently enacted law in the District of Columbia, GW administrators are encouraging students in D.C. to keep it down.

The Disorderly Conduct Amendment Act of 2010, which went into effect this month, calls for up to 90 days in jail and up to a $500 fine for people who make “an unreasonably loud noise” between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. “that is likely to annoy or disturb one or more other persons in their residences.”

“We encourage all students to be mindful of their conduct if they reside in or visit friends throughout the District of Columbia, as this law applies to every individual,” says Tara Pereira, assistant dean of students.

Students who have questions or concerns should contact the Office of Off-Campus Student Affairs at 202-994-0334, Ms. Pereira says.

“The law requires that the noise be loud enough that it’s likely to annoy at least one person in her or his residence, not offices, stores or cars. This is about the level of noise, not the content,” says Kevin Hay, chief of the GW Police Department.
