Jung-sil Lee, a professional lecturer of art history at the Corcoran School of Arts and Design, has written the book, “Modern and Contemporary Korean Art in Context (1950 - Now).”
The book explores how artists in Korea have responded to shifting historical, political and social contexts from military dictatorship and democratization to globalization and the digital age. The book examines a wide range of movements, including modernism, Dansaekhwa, Minjung Misul, Hangukhwa, feminist and media art. It also addresses key artistic forms such as traditional ink painting, sculpture, photography, performance, installation and digital art.
Lee has been a historian of modern and contemporary art from global perspectives and an independent curator. Her research interests cover public memorials, ritual theory, feminism and grassroots activism through art.
