Melani McAlister, a professor of American studies and international affairs, is one of nine individuals selected to join the 2023-2024 class of Harvard Radcliffe Fellows. The fellowship program is designed to support artists and scholars who have shown promise in their field.
McAlister is currently working on a broad cultural study of the circulation of Third World music and literature in the United States in the 1970s and 1980s. Her book will explore how Third World artists worked with alternative U.S. cultural distributors such as small presses, feminist bookstores and independent record companies to create political projects.
