Longtime CNN correspondent Dana Bash, B.A. ’93, has a new role at the cable news channel. The George Washington University graduate was promoted to chief political correspondent on Monday.

Ms. Bash will serve as CNN’s lead correspondent covering the Republican primary and Capitol Hill. She also will participate in the questioning of candidates at the Sept. 16 Reagan Library debate, according to a memo released to staff from CNN political director Sam Feist and Washington deputy bureau chief Virginia Moseley.

“Dana is one of the best examples of a true CNN success story,” Mr. Feist and Ms. Moseley wrote. “Her career is an extraordinary example of how hard work and great news instincts can take you almost anywhere in journalism.”

The School of Media and Public Affairs alumna had previously served as CNN’s chief congressional correspondent, earning a Dirksen Award from the National Press Foundation in 2010. She covered the George W. Bush administration as the CNN’s White House correspondent in the mid-2000s and was a Capitol Hill producer prior to transitioning to on-air roles. Ms. Bash covered major stories on the Hill, including the war on terrorism, the Florida recount and the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton.

She joined CNN shortly after graduating from GW, beginning as a library assistant in the Washington bureau. Ms. Bash has participated in several GW events since her graduation, appearing on a 2011 politics panel and a 2010 alumni event sponsored by the Luther Rice Society.
