The GW Division of Student Affairs is offering support to students affected by the disappearance of Elliott School of International Affairs junior Nicholas Upton, who went missing Aug. 30 while on a travel break from his study abroad program in South Africa.

Mr. Upton, a junior from Redding, Conn., and a member of the George Washington University rowing team and Kappa Alpha Order fraternity, was last seen swimming in the Eastern Cape Province on Sunday at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time, according to a statement from Vice Provost and Dean of Student Affairs Peter Konwerski.

“Our study abroad program partner in Cape Town, South Africa, notified GW that one of our students traveling during a break in the program is missing,” Dr. Konwerski said. “Authorities in Cape Town conducted a search, and sadly, Nick has not been found. We are closely monitoring this situation and are in touch with his family. Our hearts go out to them and others who knew and loved Nick.”

In addition to services for students, the university Employee Assistance Program is available to faculty and staff. Mental Health Services within the Colonial Health Center can be reached at 202-994-5300. Students who have academic concerns can reach out to their academic advisers. Those who are concerned about a member of the GW community can complete a CARE Network Report form. Resources for parents are available through the Office of Parent Services at 202-994-2305.

A private vigil is being organized by friends of Mr. Upton.
