An Inclusive Campus

Timothy Kane

GW is continuing to strengthen its diversity and inclusion initiatives on campus.

Timothy Kane, director of GW’s Office of Community Service, will step into a new role as interim associate director for inclusion initiatives at GW.

In this position, Mr. Kane will expand on the university’s current diversity and inclusion efforts on campus, including the GW Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center, which provides a comprehensive range of education, support and advocacy services to create and maintain an open, safe and inclusive campus environment.

“As a proud gay member of the GW community with master’s degrees in divinity and theology, I am honored to serve in this new role focusing on supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students,” says Mr. Kane. “My master’s thesis was titled ‘Solidarity as the Greatest Hope for the Gay and Lesbian Community.’ This type of solidarity is what I hope we can promote together as GW welcomes and celebrates the richness of our campus community.”

“I am excited that Timothy will serve in this position. He brings great passion, enthusiasm, knowledge and experience as a skilled professional to the LGBT Resource Center, our students and staff,” says Helen Cannaday Saulny, associate vice president and co-chair of the President’s Council on Diversity and Inclusion.

“This position is important as we strive to provide support, mentoring and education for our students, as well as to create learning environments and a campus climate that accepts, welcomes and celebrates diverse views and people,” she says.

Additional program recommendations from the President’s Council on Diversity and Inclusion, an initiative launched by GW President Steven Knapp in February 2010, will be reported to Dr. Knapp and Terri Harris Reed, GW's new vice provost for diversity and inclusion, later this spring.
