Republican Ed Gillespie, who made the Senate race in Virginia far closer than anyone thought possible, conceded to Sen. Mark Warner (D) on Friday.

Sen. Warner, B.A ’77, had declared victory Tuesday night, but Mr. Gillespie waited to concede, saying the race was too close to call. Sen. Warner will wind up winning the race by nearly 17,000 votes, according to The Washington Post. His margin of victory will be less than 1 percent.

The popular former Virginia governor, who won his Senate seat in a 2008 landslide over Republican Jim Gilmore, was expected to coast to another easy victory Tuesday. But Mr. Gillespie swept almost all of Southwest Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley and performed well in Loudoun and Prince William counties in Northern Virginia to keep the race tight late into Tuesday night, even as the returns in Fairfax County and Arlington pushed Sen. Warner ahead for good.
