George Washington President Steven Knapp on Monday joined more than 180 college and university presidents across the country to show support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program.
DACA allows certain undocumented immigrants who entered the country before their 16th birthday and before June 2007 to receive exemption from deportation.
Dr. Knapp signed the document, a Pomona College-led effort, which says “DACA should be upheld, continued and expanded.”
“This is both a moral imperative and a national necessity,” the document states. “America needs talent—and these students, who have been raised and educated in the United States, are already part of our national community. They represent what is best about America, and as scholars and leaders they are essential to the future.”
The university provides information on how to apply to GW as an undocumented individual, as well as financial aid and on-campus support resources. With the exception of those who seek an international student visa, the university does not ask for proof of citizenship and does not require students to disclose their immigration status.
