James is an associate editor for GW Today. He covers the university administration, the board of trustees, faculty senate, development, alumni affairs, politics, public safety, sports, the Graduate School of Political Management and international students.

He managed alumni communications at his alma mater, James Madison University, from 2011 to 2013, and was an editor at the Washington Examiner from 2007 to 2011. His book, "Midnight in Chattanooga: The game, the team and the dream behind the rise of JMU football," chronicles the first team in college football history to win three road playoff games en route to an NCAA national championship. The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, the Virginia Press Association and the Society of Professional Journalists have recognized his work.
