The George Washington University announced Monday the winners of the 11th annual Faculty Awards, which recognize faculty for excellence in teaching, research, service and other areas.
Lisa Bowleg, a professor of psychology in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, was awarded the Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Prize for Scholarship (Research).
“The prize recognizes my current achievements as a faculty member, but also GW’s 30-year history in my academic development as a social and behavioral science researcher,” she said.
At GW, Dr. Bowleg earned a master’s degree in public policy with a concentration in women’s studies and a doctorate in applied social psychology from the Department of Psychology, where she returned to teach in 2013.
She said the excellent research training that she received at GW was fundamental to laying the groundwork for her critical research that focuses on social-structural inequities, such as racism and police brutality, and health inequities, including treatment of HIV and AIDS, among underrepresented and historically marginalized groups.
“Such research can provide evidence to inform policy and practice solutions that in turn can have real-world transformative impact,” she said.
Shira Robinson, a professor of history in CCAS, was awarded the Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Prize for Teaching Excellence. She said she is especially moved that she was nominated for the prize by her students, who are a joy to teach, engaged, and ready to be challenged.
“We study history to understand how we ended up with the troubled world we have today and to think together about how we can make it better,” she said. “I love learning with my students and look forward to continuing this work with them.”
Carol Sigelman, also a professor of psychology in CCAS, won the Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Prize for Service. She said she is deeply honored to receive the prize and credits her win to several key factors: her colleagues in the special community of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences; a desire to help others accomplish what they want to do; and never wanting to say no.
“Having served at the department, college and university levels, I can’t recommend service enough,” Dr. Sigelman said. “It’s pushed me out of my office and toward a deeper appreciation of what a university can and should be. It’s allowed me to learn from, collaborate with and accomplish things with the many dedicated and talented faculty, staff and students all across the university, who make GW great and care about making it greater.”
