University Launches GW Experts Series

March 19, 2012

A new series of television advertisements that began airing this weekend showcases the research of GW professors—from the front lines of tuberculosis to keeping drivers between the lines on the road.

The ads highlight individual researchers and their efforts in “tackling some of the biggest challenges of our time,” Vice President for Research Leo Chalupa says in the TV spots.

One of the two initial advertisements features chemistry professor Cynthia Dowd, who is working to develop new treatment options for tuberculosis, which can be difficult to treat—a situation complicated by the fact that one-third of the world’s population is latently infected with the bacteria that causes TB.

The other ad spotlights engineering professor Azim Eskandarian, a transportation safety expert and director of GW’s Center for Intelligent Systems Research. As part of his research, he studies drowsy and fatigued drivers to help develop systems to prevent crashes.

The university plans to broaden the campaign over the course of the next year to spotlight many more researchers from across campus.

The campaign began airing on WJLA, channel 7, yesterday and can also be seen on the Office of the Vice President for Research website.

The ads will air between 6 and 7 p.m. on WJLA, channel 7, and will rotate throughout the month. The ads will also air four times within the next month during Good Morning Washington between 6 and 7 a.m.
