Teaching Day for GW Faculty
GW’s second annual Teaching Day provides a forum for faculty to explore what teaching excellence means at GW. To catalyze the conversation, two internationally distinguished educators will speak. Lee Shulman, Professor Emeritus at Stanford University, former president of the American Educational Research Association and an acknowledged leader of educational research, will share his thoughts on an issue of great relevance to GW: teaching excellence in a research university. In the afternoon, Ken Bain, who has founded four major teaching centers and was recently named Provost of the University of the District of Columbia, will be leading a workshop based on the research presented in his award-winning book, "What the Best College Teachers Do."
Teaching Day is sponsored by the Teaching & Learning Collaborative. The TLC strives to increase understanding of modern pedagogy (and andragogy) and to continue to stimulate discussion about teaching at the university and its role in faculty development and advancement. Research has illuminated deficiencies in the traditional lecture-based model of teaching (the information transmission model) and shown the need for a greater focus on active learning. The TLC, GW’s faculty-driven center for teaching excellence, is growing in its mission to assist faculty who want to improve the academic culture for instructors and students.
