In Memoriam: Eugene Lambert

Emeritus trustee remembered as a generous supporter and benefactor.

Trustee Emeritus Eugene Lambert, A.A. ’55, B.A. ’57, chair of the Heritage Society, former president of the GW Alumni Association, and founding and emeritus member of Columbian College’s National Council for the Arts and Sciences, died March 29. He was 77.

Mr. Lambert served as a GW alumnus trustee from 2000 to 2006 and was elected as an emeritus trustee in May 2007.

“Gene was a generous supporter and benefactor of the George Washington University,” President Steven Knapp said. “I came to know him in particular as the unfailingly witty and gracious host of our annual Heritage Society events. He will be greatly missed.”

A pioneering food and drug lawyer known as a leader in his field, Mr. Lambert spent his career as partner at Covington & Burling LLP, specializing in the regulation of food and drugs for animals. He was also an expert in human food, over-the-counter drugs and cosmetics, and taught food- and drug-related courses at American University, Johns Hopkins, Boston University, Rutgers and Seton Hall.

Mr. Lambert graduated from Yale Law School in 1960 after serving as the managing editor of the Yale Law Journal. He also clerked for the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Verner Platt Lambert, three children, Kathryn, Kenneth and Jocelyn Lambert, and two grandchildren, Seth Garmers and Abram Davidson.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Temple Beth Ami, 14330 Travilah Road, Rockville, Md. Interment to follow at King David Memorial Gardens in Falls Church, Va.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Lambert’s family has requested donations to the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences or the charity of your choice.
